Task brief

The task brief is laid on top of a large piece of paper on a table. The brief for the task is as follows:

Make exactly 99 holes in this piece of paper.

Your holes must have a diameter of at least three millimetres, and form a recognisable picture or pattern.

If you make more or fewer than 99 holes, you are disqualified.

Also, if you look at Alex or speak to Alex at any point, you are disqualified.

Fastest wins.

Your time starts now.

Task notes

  • The task takes place in an industrial room at Frogmore Paper Mill in Apsley, Hertfordshire, in front of what appears to be a machine comprised mainly of large rollers.
  • A variety of objects for hole-making are hidden on the large machine, including a golf tee, a fork, a pair of scissors, and a hole punch.
  • There are also wooden hazard barriers positioned either side of the table.

Attempts

Here's a brief description of the contestants' attempts. Someone's probably working on writing up some additional detail, though!

  • Frankie silently found a pair of scissors and stabbed holes in the paper in the shape of a sun, ignoring Alex's questions. He made 99 holes in the paper in 5 minutes and 51 seconds, receiving 5 points.
  • Ivo continuously spoke to himself, whilst finding different hole-making objects, and decided to make a smiley face with a golf tee. Despite making 99 holes in 5 minutes and 9 seconds, he accidentally spoke to Alex at one point, so was disqualified from the task.
  • Jenny immediately answered a question from Alex but decided to carry on doing the task by folding the paper to make holes quicker and using a golf tee she had found. She continued to answer Alex's questions throughout. As she made 109 holes and talked to Alex, Jenny was disqualified from the task.
  • Kiell managed to find a fork and started making holes in the task brief, before eventually noticing the larger piece of paper on the table. He made 99 holes in the shape of a rectangle in 11 minutes and 47 seconds, receiving 4 points.
  • Mae explored the underside of the table before looking at Alex, and so was disqualified from the task.
