Task brief

The task brief is presented in the branches of a tree, near the front of the mansion. The brief for the task is as follows:

Make this tree as attractive as possible.

The most attractive tree wins.

You have 12 minutes.

Your time starts now.

Task notes

  • Just as in English, the word used in the task brief for ‘attractive’ (‘puoleensavetava’) can also be used to refer to magnetic attraction.

Attempts

Here's a description of the contestants' attempts. Images will be added later.

  • Kalle runs to the shed to look for props. He pulls out some costume items, planning to put together an outfit that would draw “the kind of people who have a tree fetish”. He tapes two pieces of fabric onto the tree as a sort of tube top and skirt, then starts adding accessories, making tree puns as he does. All of the puns stem from the fact that the Finnish words for ‘tree’ and ‘wood’ are the same (‘puu’). He adds a necklace of wooden beads, and declares that his tree is in fact Anna Puu (a pop singer who appeared as a guest contestant in episode 7 of season 3). Kalle also shoves something under one of the pieces of fabric to give the tree the appearance of having breasts with quite prominent nipples. Jaakko awards him joint third place.
  • Pirjo looks at the tree and wonders if perhaps she could find a large magnet to attach to the tree, and simply throw large metal balls at it to prove how attractive it is. Instead, Pirjo uses a long rope to create a pulley system around the tree and, after experimenting with a bucket, has Pilvi put on a helmet and become the object that will be attracted to the tree. Pirjo tells Pilvi to lay on the ground (“the more relaxed you can be, the less this will hurt”), and slowly pulls Pilvi (who has the rope around her neck!) slightly closer to the tree, using the pulley system. For “the madness and entertainment value”, Jaakko awards Pirjo first place.
  • Miska runs to the shed to look for props. He tapes a few different-coloured fabrics to the tree, to serve as a shirt and sleeves, and also adds several strings of beads to the tree’s branches, and around the tree’s ‘neck’. To give the tree some more personality, he gaffer-tapes some eyes and a straw hat to its trunk, and maracas to one of its branches, declaring his attractive tree to have “a flamenco theme”. To make the tree even more ‘attractive’, Miska then attaches a bungee cord to it, and demonstrates how the cord pulls him towards the tree. Jaakko awards him joint third place.
  • Eija runs to the shed for materials. After finding some leopard print fabric, Eija gets the idea to make the tree specifically attractive to animals. She wraps the leopard print fabric on one of the branches of the tree, and strings some wooden beads onto another branch. She also places some sort of wooden frame higher up in the branches, calling it a “balcony” for the birds. She also mounts what appears to be a triangular kite to the trunk (the same item she used to build her boat in the ‘Make a sailboat for a rubber duck’ task, in episode 3), declaring it to be a “hideaway” for rabbits or mice. Jaakko awards her joint third place.
  • Fathi briefly ponders on the concept of attraction, realising that everyone is attracted to different things, and wonders if there’s something which is universally attractive. He quickly settles on money, and starts asking the surrounding members of the production crew if anyone has any cash on them. When no-one does, Fathi runs to the shed, finds a large piece of paper, and starts to paint on it. He explains that his original idea was to paint “FREE CANDY” on the sign, but realised that standing in a public place where there are children around and offering free candy was probably not a great idea. Instead, he paints “MONEY BY THIS TREE” on the sign, but misspells one of the words, and does not notice until it is too late. He leans the sign against the tree and places a bucket next to it, before spotting his spelling error. For his “different approach” to the other contestants, Jaakko awards Fathi second place.
