Task brief

The task brief is laid next to a table tennis paddle on a table tennis table at the side of the Taskmaster house. The brief for the task is as follows:

Win one point in table tennis against Paul.

If Paul scores a point against you, you'll be penalised with a penalty of your choice.

You may not choose the same penalty twice in a row.

Fastest to score a point wins.

Your time starts when Paul serves the ball.

Task notes

  • Near to the table are a clothes rack full of assorted jackets, and a table upon which are laid out a variety of items to use as alternate 'rackets' (including a canoe paddle, a hockey stick, an oar, another (much smaller) table tennis paddle, a croquet mallet, a cricket bat, a garden shovel, and a tennis racket).
  • Also nearby is an easel with a board on it which reads: "PENALTIES: 1. Put on a jacket. 2. Replace your racket. 3. Make Paul a crustless peanut butter and jam sandwich and cut it into triangles.".
  • Next to this easel, there is a small round table upon which there is a cutting board, a stack of sliced bread, a stack of small plates, a knife, and jars of peanut butter and jam (raspberry and strawberry).
  • Paul is standing at the opposite end of the table tennis table, holding a paddle of his own.
  • In the studio, Paul clarifies that he places the contestants' old rackets in a bin, each time they replace them.
  • As their attempts at the task begin, it becomes apparent that paul is actually rather good at table tennis.
