Biography

Melanie Bracewell (born on 19 July 1995) is a New Zealand comedian, actor, and scriptwriter.

She became interested in comedy as a child and, as a teenager, wrote a comedic blog. She studied Communication and Media Studies at the University of Auckland.

After starting her career in stand-up, won the 7 Days Comedy Apprentice competition in 2014, and Raw Comedy Quest in 2015. In 2016, she won Best Auckland Newcomer at the New Zealand International Comedy Festival.

In 2016 and 2017, she worked alongisde Jeremy Wells and Matt Heath as a content producer on the breakfast show on Radio Hauraki.

She has appeared many times as a contestant on the NZ panel show 7 Days since 2017, and on the Australian panel show Have You Been Paying Attention? since 2018.

Between 2017 and 2019, she wrote for, and appeared as a host and 'Whip Around Reporter', on the NZ current affairs show The Project.

In 2018, she received the Billy T Award for best emerging NZ comedian, and also won Breakthrough Comedian of the Year at the NZ Comedy Guild Awards.

Between 2018 and 2022, she was a writer on the TV series Wellington Paranormal, and also appeared as two single-episode characters of the show (Romantic Goth in S01 E05, and Fatberg Victim in S03 E06).

In 2019, she was short-listed for the Kevin Smith Memorial Cup for Outstanding Artist Achievement, Best Female Comedian, and Bizarre Moment of the Year, at the New Zealand Comedy Guild Awards.

In 2020, she received international attention when videos and photos of her impersonating then Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern went viral. Melanie and Jacinda later met and posted a TikTok video together.

Also in 2020, she appeared alongside Karen O'Leary in one episode of The Eggplant, a teen drama crime-comedy web series.

Since 2021, she has co-hosted the Australian comedy show The Cheap Seats, alongside Tim McDonald.

She appeared as a recurring contestant on the NZ/Australian panel show Patriot Brains in 2022.

In 2023, she briefly co-hosted the podcast Bananapod with fellow NZ comedian Ray O'Leary and appeared as a contestant on Guy Montgomery's comedy panel show, Guy Montgomery's Guy Mont-Spelling Bee.
