Task brief
The task brief is presented on top of a plinth in the lab. The brief for the task is as follows:
Make this balloon hover between the flags the longest.
In eight minutes, the crane will release the balloon.
After the balloon is released, you may not touch it.
Before the balloon is released, you may not remove it from the crane.
Your attempt is over once the balloon floats above the flags, or sinks below the lower flags.
Longest balloon hover between the flags wins.
Your time starts now.
Task notes
- Also on the plinth, there are a box of tissues, a bowl of marshmallows, a jar full of feathers, a plain white sock, a roll of tape, and a pair of scissors.
- Next to the first plinth, there is a shorter plinth, on top of which there is a radio-controlled toy excavator with a grappling claw, in which a helium balloon is being held.
- Strung across the room at approximately knee and head height, there are two lines of bunting with red flags.
- Although very similar in nature to the ‘Make a balloon hover‘ task, there are enough differences between the set-ups, rules, and objectives of the two that this is categorised as original here.
