Task brief

The brief for the task is as follows:

Get to know this person.

In five minutes you will be examined on your knowledge of the person.

You may not ask the same question multiple times.

The person will alternately speak the truth, lie, and brag, in that order, but not necessarily starting with the truth.

Your time starts now.

Task notes

  • What is the person’s name?

Attempts

Here's a description of the contestants' attempts. Someone's probably working on collecting some images to add later!

  • Anders does not start his attempt with any sort of control questions to figure out the man’s starting point. He does not even seem to pick up on the man’s order when his answers are obviously lies (such as the man claiming to be the King of Saudi Arabia’s private anaesthetist). Anders' lack of preparation holds during the quiz, as he gets zero correct answers. Anders is still awarded a single point.
  • Annika does not start her attempt with any sort of control questions to figure out the man’s starting point. Instead, she just constantly asks as many questions as she can. Either she eventually figures out the man’s order, or has some lucky guesses during the quiz, as she gives two correct answers, and ties for first place.
  • Neel immediately realises she needs to ask a control question. She asks the man if he is a woman, and from his answer, figures out what his starting position was. She therefore successfully asks important questions every third question – including things like the man’s name, age, where he lives, and what he does for a living. In the studio, Neel says that to try to keep the truths straight, as her memory isn’t the best, she would repeat the truths out loud, either on their own or as part of a follow up question to the man. Neel gives two correct answers during the quiz, and ties for first place.
  • After asking a few questions, Mahamad turns around to look at Mark, discovering the paddles that indicate whether the man should lie, brag, or tell the truth. He then stands behind the man so he can see Mark’s paddles while still asking questions. Mahamad asks the man (when the truth paddle is “active”) whether the paddles tell him how to answer; he double-checks his suspicion by using his next question (when lie is “active”) whether Mark is assisting the man in answering the questions. Having successfully figured out the man’s answering order, Mahamad begins asking relevant questions at the appropriate time. Mahamad gives two correct answers during the quiz, and ties for first place.
  • After asking a few questions, Jakob turns around to look at Mark, discovering the paddles that indicate whether the man should lie, brag, or tell the truth. He moves Mark to stand between him and the man, so he can see the paddles while still asking questions. However, Jakob is unable to understand Mark’s turning system indicating which is the “active” paddle. It seems that Jakob eventually does figure out the system, but by that point, he has reached the end of his interview time. Jakob does manage to guess one correct answer during the quiz, and is awarded three points.
