Task briefs

John receives his extra, secret task brief in the caravan, before the team task begins. The teams receive the main task brief on the driveway of the Taskmaster house, where it is found inside a shopping trolley. The briefs for the task are as follows:

To John:

Sabotage your team in the next task.

If your team loses the task, you win five points.

If your team wins the task, you win zero points.

If your team accuses you of sabotaging the task, you win zero points.

Place half your hands on half your hips, and leave them there until the second part of the task is over.

Also, the hands that are on hips must only touch those hips until the second part of the task is over.

You have two minutes.

With your hands on those hips at all times, put the most sand in the shopping trolley.

You may only move the shopping trolley when there is one minute left on the clock.

You have 10 minutes.

Your time starts now.

Task notes

  • The contestants find sand referenced in the main task brief on the wooden decking around the side of the Taskmaster house.
  • The sabotage element of the task is obviously inspired by the sabotage task assigned to Laura Daniel in Taskmaster NZ season 2, episode 8's 'Pack Paul's car with inflated objects' task.

Attempts

Here's a description of the contestants' attempts. Someone's probably working on collecting some images to add later!

  • Munya decides to stand in front of Sarah, with both of her hands upon both of his hips, leaving both of his hands free. They find a large planter, which they move to the decking and begin filling with sand using a couple of drainpipe elbows. Realising that one pot of sand probably won't be enough to win, they then find two similar planters and fill those up, too. With just 1 minute and 10 seconds left on the clock, they retrieve the shopping trolley from the front of the house. With just 25 second sleft, Munya lifts the trolley up and over the ropes around the decking. Climbing in after it, the team unfortunately only has enough time to put one of their planters full of sand into the trolley before Alex blows his whistle. In total, they managed to get 21kg of sand into the trolley, just winning the task after John's successful sabotage of his own team.
  • Fern stands at the front of her team's conga-line, with John behind her with one of his hands on one of her hips, and Dara at the back with both of his hands on John's hips. After John's secret sabotage task is revealed in studio, Dara admits that it's a bit of a relief as, at the time of the task, he'd just thought John was an idiot. As the team heads to find out where the sand is, Fern refers to John as 'dafty in the middle', thus coining the episode's title. As Fern fills a top hat with sand, John 'helpfully' brushes sand from the top of the pile with a small broom he has found, spreading it out further. While Fern then fills a large plastic measuring cylinder with sand, John upends the top hat on the deck, creating a perfect sand-top-hat. After this is noticed by his team-mates, Fern puts the sand back in the top hat again. They then spot the planters, and fill one of those with sand, too. As the team then backs through the ropes and off of the deck, John points out that he doesn't want to knock over the top hat, all the while intentionally backing into it with his foot. However, Dara is supervising the situation, and is able to rescue the hat before it goes off the edge. They aim to fill another planter, but realise they are short on time, so set off to fetch the shopping trolley. Fern places all of the filled containers of sand into the shopping trolley from outside of the deck. John then pretends to be confused by the details of the task, badly emptying the top hat and measuring cylinder's contents into the planter, and ensuring that most of it ends up on the ground instead, while his teammates scream at him, wondering what the hell he is doing. In the studio, Alex reveals that the team had just 20.9kg of sand left in their trolley at the end, meaning that they lost the task, but John won his sabotage task and earned five points.
