Task brief

The task brief is taped to a wooden box which has a tap on its side, in the garden of the Bäst i Test house. The brief for the task is as follows:

Fill the bathtub with water from the water box.

You may not move or destroy the water box or the bathtub.

In 10 minutes, the water will run for 90 seconds.

Most water in the bathtub wins.

Your time starts now.

Task notes

  • Some distance away from the box, halfway down the hill, there is an empty bathtub.

Attempts

Here's a description of the contestants' attempts. Someone's probably working on collecting some images to add later!

  • Henrik immediately decides that he needs a garden hose, and runs off to find one. Before he does, he asks David if he would be allowed to drink the water during the 90 seconds, and subsequently urinate it into the bathtub. Henrik apparently abandons the hose idea though, as he returns with several long pieces of guttering and a bucket. He lays a path down the hill towards the bathtub with the guttering, but also lines the edges of part of it with sponges, to soak up any excess water. He seems to realise that the water will need to travel uphill into the bathtub, at the end. To combat this problem, he places several buckets at the bottom of the guttering channel to catch the water, which he then plans to pour into the bathtub. When the water starts, Henrik frantically tries to cram the hose into the hole, to salvage his plan. While he is eventually able to hold the hose in position, the other end of the hose pops out of the guttering, sending the water into the grass. He is eventually able to reposition the hose enough to start filling one of the buckets. He moves 4.7 litres of water, which earns him second place.
  • Nikki searches the shed, and unearths a garden hose. She brings it back to the water box along with several other pipes and tubes, and begins cobbling them together to run down the hill. She tells David that she’s worried, because she isn’t able to test that the hose is securely connected to the spigot without water coming out. She also wonders how much water could actually pass through the rather thin pipes in 90 minutes. David quickly reminds her that it’s actually meant to be 90 seconds, not minutes. Eventually, Nikki realises that the water will need to travel uphill to get into the bathtub, and that her set-up will therefore not work. Running out of time, she abandons her pipe completely, and holds a wheelbarrow underneath the tap to catch the water. When the water starts, Nikki spends much of her time wondering how she will continue the task, before finally picking up a long yellow tube from her abandoned pipe system, and holding it over the hole. This method is not particularly successful, as Nikki seems more interested in staying dry than actually collecting the water. When her time is up, Nikki declares the task to be “unfair”, and leaves without shaking David’s proffered hand. Nikki moves no water, which earns her a participation point.
  • Marko immediately runs off after reading the task, and returns with several long pieces of guttering. He runs them down the hill and into the bathtub, but immediately realises that the final piece arcs uphill, into the bathtub. To solve this issue, Marko attempts to raise the guttering with planks of wood, but he has difficulty getting everything to balance. Eventually, he does manage to raise his channel enough to allow water to flow into the bathtub. When the water starts, Marko holds a dish over the hole, trying to divert the flow of water into his channel. He is eventually able to get a small stream of water into the guttering. Marko moves 0.2 litres of water, which earns him fourth place.
  • Edvin grabs some long tubes from the shed, and starts making a pipe system to run from the water box to the bathtub. However, he quickly abandons this plan when his time starts running out, instead opting for a large bowl, a series of jars, and several sponges. Edvin plans on filling the small jars directly from the tap and pouring the water into the large bowl, then running the bowl down to the bathtub. He also plans for the sponges to soak up any stray water. When the water starts, Edvin immediately holds one of the jars over the spray, before realising he can use the sponges to soak up some of the water and then squeeze the sponges into the jar. After the water stops, Edvin takes the jar and sponges down to the bathtub and pours/squeezes the water into it. Edvin moves 1.45 litres of water, which earns him third place.
  • Linnéa finds an oil drum near the shed, and rolls it down to the water box. She attaches a hose to the spigot, and drapes the end of the hose into the oil drum. When the water starts, Linnéa just stares at it for some time (which Babben describes as “a state of learned helplessness”), before finally disconnecting the hose and holding it over the hole in the water box. After the water has stopped, Linnéa moves the barrel down to the bathtub and pours the water into it. In the studio, Linnéa claims that the reason for her seemingly stunned reaction was that she first thought that the box had failed, and that the water was supposed to come through the tap, but then she realised what was going on when no-one rushed in to fix the problem. Linnéa moves 6.6 litres of water, which earns her first place.
