Task brief

The brief for the task is as follows:

Say whether the item will fit through the hole or not fit through the hole.

If you get it right, you lose an egg.

The fewest eggs remaining wins.

Task notes

  • The contestants are seated in front of the stage, while Greg and Alex are up on the stage, throughout the task, and stood behind a line of three wooden panels.
  • Each panel is divided into three sections, each of which has a shape cut into it.
  • The first section of the first panel has a rubber duck-shaped hole in it, and the contestants had to predict whether a similarly-sized rubber duck would pass through that hole.
  • The second section of the first panel has a triangular hole cut into it, and the contestants must predict whether a frying pan will fit through the hole.
  • The third section of the first panel has a square with two bevelled corners, and the contestants must predict whether a traffic cone will fit through it.
  • The first section of the second panel has a semi-circular hole cut into it, and the contestants must predict whether a half a watermelon will fit through the hole (though it turns out that the watermelon is squishy, and not a real one).
  • The second section of the second panel has a domed rectangular hole cut into it (like the profile of a US-style mailbox), and the contestants must predict whether a bowling ball will fit through it.
  • The third section of the second panel has a narrow rectangular hole cut into it, and the contestants must predict whether a boxing glove will fit through the hole.
  • The first section of the third panel has a balloon-shaped hole cut into it, and the contestants must predict whether an inflated balloon will fit through it.
  • The second section of the third panel actually has two holes in it: the first is shaped like a chair, and the contestants must predict whether a chair will pass through it; the second is a very small circle, and the contestants must predict whether a folded umbrella will fit through it.
  • The final section of the third panel has a hole in the shape of a small man cut into it, and the contestants must predict whether Alex will fit through (the section in this case appears to be made from something more brittle than wood – perhaps polystyrene – since it breaks very easily as Alex attempts to crawl through).
  • Each of the contestants has a rack in front of them which contains 10 rubber eggs at the start of the task.
  • Each of the contestants is also equipped with a pair of paddles, with the words ‘YES’ and ‘NO’ on them, which they must use to indicate their predictions.
  • Greg is the one who attempts to fit each of the objects through its associated hole, though Alex also tries to fit the umbrella through the small circular hole, and is also in control of his own attempt to crawl through the little man-shaped hole.
