Mastertask notes:
In this version of the task, there are 12 rubber gloves for the contestants to shake hands with and identify the contents of, and they are not looking to identify the name of anyone whose name is spelt out by the first letters of those contents. Also, a variety of clues to the contents are provided in the room, including a full list of them which is written on the inside of the glove they are wearing themselves.

Task brief

The task brief is sealed inside a Ziplock bag, in a bowl of soapy water, on a plinth in the lab. The brief for the task is as follows:

Wearing your glove, shake hands with the other 12 gloves, and guess their contents.

You may shake hands with each glove for no more than 10 seconds.

You may not lean over or walk around the bench.

Most correct guesses wins.

You have 10 minutes.

Your time starts now.
A partial list of contents used in the task written on a yellow rubber glove. The list reads: mam, fairy bread, mars bars, apples, mayo, jeans, jelly, a gust, timber.

Task notes

  • Also in the soapy water, there are some dishes and a laminated calendar featuring 12 images of Tom Cashman posing with a variety of objects.
  • On the table in the centre of the room, a long perspex stand has been erected, with 12 circular holes cut into it.
  • There is a yellow washing-up glove hanging from each of these holes. Each glove is filled with something unique, which is prevented from falling out of the wrist of the glove by the circle of perspex which had been cut out to create the hole.
  • The contents of each glove supposedly sounds something like one of the months of the year, matching up with the images on Tom Cashman’s calendar:
    1. January – Jam
    2. February – Fairy bread (buttered white bread coated with hundreds and thousands)
    3. March – Mars bars
    4. April – Apple (sliced)
    5. May – Mayonnaise
    6. June – Jeans (denim)
    7. July – Jelly
    8. August – A gust of air (provided by Tom Cashman, using a hairdryer with a narrow nozzle)
    9. September – Soap and timber (wood chippings)
    10. October – Octopus (frozen battered calamari rings; so not actually octopus)
    11. November – (fake) Moustaches (Movember)
    12. December – Dice
  • The full list of contents is also written in marker pen on the inside of the yellow washing-up glove being worn by the contestant.
