Task brief

The task brief is held by David, who is standing on a squash court. The brief for the task is as follows:

Free yourselves and give each other a team hug.

The team that hugs each other the fastest wins.

Your time starts now.

Task notes

  • In the middle of the squash court, there is the table which is usually seen in the lab, and which has five bowls of custom-flavoured sweets upon it.
  • There is a large sign reading ‘MENY’ (‘MENU’) to the left of the table, and a large periodic table of the chemical elements to the right of the table.
  • David handcuffs each contestant, and then connects their handcuffs together with chains, fastened with two combination locks, before handing them the task brief.
  • The back wall of the squash court has a small red arrow attached to it, pointing to a specific spot on the wall, which is where the tiny handcuff key can be found.
  • The flavours listed on the menu are as follows (working down each column in turn, from left to right): banana and pepper, cumin and spinach, liquorice and tomato, grapefruit and curry, cucumber and oats, asparagus and chocolate, apricot and oregano, pear and thyme, kale and bacon, hummus and ginger, melon and brown sauce, mustard and oregano, durian and plum, beetroot and gingerbread, radish and ‘roe’ or ‘rum’ (apparently the same word) , clover and egg toddy, wasabi and pear, raspberries and fennel, rye and pickles, cherries and broccoli, pineapple and garlic, mint and cheese, herring and vanilla, eggplant and juniper, kiwi and haggis, snail and strawberry, olive and hawthorn, anise and lingonberry.
  • The actual flavours of the sweets in the bowls are as follows:
    1. Pear and thyme, corresponding to the chemical element ‘Pt’ (Platinum), with an atomic weight of 78
    2. Raspberries (‘Hallon’) and fennel, corresponding to the chemical element ‘Hf’ (Hafnium), with an atomic weight of 72
    3. Asparagus (‘Sparris’) and chocolate, corresponding to the chemical element ‘Sc’ (Scandium), with an atomic weight of 21
    4. Anise and lingonberry, corresponding to the chemical element ‘Al’ (Aluminium), with an atomic weight of 13
    5. Mint and cheese (‘ost’), corresponding to the chemical element ‘Mo’ (Molybdenum), with an atomic weight of 42
  • The correct codes for the combination locks are therefore ‘78722’ and ‘11342’.
