Task brief

The brief for the task is as follows:

Completely free yourselves and have a team hug.

Fastest team hug wins.

Your time starts now.

Task notes

  • The task takes place in the lab, where the contestants are each handcuffed to a set of chains hanging from the ceiling, above the table.
  • There are two five-digit combination locks (labelled '1' and '2') securing the chains attached to the contestants' handcuffs to the central chain hanging from above.
  • Alex places five stemmed cocktail glasses (labelled '1' through '5') on the table, each containing custom-flavoured jelly baby gummy sweets.
  • On one wall, there is a 'Menu', listing the following possible flavours of jelly baby: Bacon and Kale; Bolognese; Broccoli; Cabbage and Rum; Chicken feet; Chocolate & Mint; Chocolate & Sage; Crickets; Cumin & Radish; Fenugreek & Eggnog; Gherkin & Aubergine; Haggis & Feta; Hummus and Ginger; Mint & Gravy; Mustard & Oregano; Olives; Onion; Peanut Butter; Pepper & Beetroot; Prunes & Durian; Salsa & Banoffee; Sausage; Seaweed; Sweetbreads; Toasted Marshmallow; Wasabi; Worcestershire Sauce; and Zest & Rye.
  • On the opposite wall, there is a poster displaying the periodic table of chemical elements.
  • Hanging from a string above the periodic table, there is a small handcuff key.
  • To complete the task, the contestants must identify the flavours of the five types of jelly baby, then figure out which chemical element that corresponds to, based on the initial letters of the flavour. The atomic number of that element is part of the 10 digits they need to open the combination locks, so they can reach the handcuff key and free themselves.
  • The jelly babies in glass 1 are Mint & Gravy flavoured, which corresponds to the element Magnesium (symbol 'Mg'), which has an atomic number of 12.
  • The jelly babies in glass 2 are Wasabi flavoured, which corresponds to the element Tungsten (symbol 'W'), which has an atomic number of 74.
  • The jelly babies in glass 3 are flavoured, which corresponds to the element Boron (symbol 'B'), which has an atomic number of 5 ('05', in this task, as each flavour must lead to two digits).
  • The jelly babies in glass 4 are Pepper & Beetroot flavoured, which corresponds to the element Lead (symbol 'Pb'), which has an atomic number of 82.
  • The jelly babies in glass 5 are Seaweed flavoured, which corresponds to the element Sulfur (symbol 'S'), which has an atomic number of 16.
  • The combination for the lock labelled '1' is therefore 12740, and the combination for lock '2' is 58216.

Attempts

Here's a brief description of the contestants' attempts. Someone's probably working on writing up some additional detail, though!

  • Frankie and Ivo initially worked out that the jelly baby flavours linked to the periodic table, but Ivo struggled to convince Frankie that he didn't need to add the digits together. After eventually unshackling themselves and attempting to hug, they spent a long time trying to locate the key for the handcuffs. They freed themselves and had a team hug in 42 minutes, receiving 2 points each.
  • After finding the key and counting the jelly babies, Mae and Jenny worked out that they had to taste the jelly babies to work out their flavour, much to Kiell's disgust. As Mae and Jenny worked out the flavours, Kiell was able to work out the which elements on the periodic table was linked to the flavour. They freed themselves and had a team hug in 17 minutes and 50 seconds, receiving 5 points each.
