Task brief
The task brief is presented on a long table in the lab. The brief for the task is as follows:
Find the prize and avoid the fava beans.
Whenever you find something in the batter, fava bean or not, you must remove it and put it in Markl’s bowl.
Each fava bean that you find adds 10 seconds to your total time.
If you find nothing in a given container, it can be assumed that you found all of the contents of that container.
Whoever finds the prize the fastest wins.
You have 10 minutes.
Your time starts now.
Task notes
- A series of bowls and other containers on the table have been filled with cake batter, and many have fava beans hidden within them.
- Hidden inside one of the larger bowls near the left-hand side of the table, there is a small box containing a tiny rubber duck. On the edge of the table facing the camera, there is a red arrow pointing to this specific bowl, with a label that reads ‘BRINDE’ (‘PRIZE’).
- There are also more fava beans taped to the edge of the table facing the camera, down one of the table legs, and dotted around randomly on the plastic sheeting in the lab.
- There are also decoy gift boxes taped to the underside of the table, along with more individual fava beans. The decoy gift boxes all contain slips of paper with a number of fava beans written on them.
- This task is inspired by the tradition of the King cake. In Portugal, the King cake (or ‘bolo rei’) is a dry cake containing nuts, and with crystalised fruit on top, and it is generally eaten throughout December. The King cake traditionally comes with both a small gift and a fava bean baked inside of it. The person who receives the slice containing the gift supposedly receives good luck for the rest of the year, while the person who receives the slice containing the fava bean is obliged to pay for the cake the following year.
