Attempts

Here's a description of the contestants' attempts. Someone's probably working on collecting some images to add later!

  • Fernando begins by trying to kick the basketball into the hoop, and fails. Fernando finds a hat, uses it to collect the basketball, and attempts to throw the basketball into the hoop by flicking it out of the hat. He tries this same method with a Taskmaster spot, and nearly succeeds on his first shot. His subsequent shots using this method fail by increasing margins. Fernando finds a small boat, intending to use it to get closer to the net, before realising it still won’t solve his problem of getting the ball into the net. Finally, Fernando finds a net (in which he wraps the ball) and a long pool skimmer, and is able to lift the basketball into the hoop. Fernando takes 18 minutes 33 seconds and comes last.
  • Gilmário begins by trying to kick the basketball into the hoop. He gets the correct height, but misses the hoop. Gilmário then asks if Nuno can shoot the basketball for him. After a quick lesson from Gilmário on how to shoot a basketball, Nuno attempts – and fails – to score a basket. Gilmário locates a pool net and, after some trial and error, manages to get the ball into the hoop. Gilmário takes 10 minutes 33 seconds and comes fourth.
  • Toy begins by trying to kick the basketball into the hoop. It rebounds off of the backboard and lands in the pool, so Toy finds a pool net to retrieve the ball and tries again. After retrieving the ball again, he places it in a bucket tied with rope, and changes into a wetsuit he finds in the shed. Draping the rope and bucket over his neck, Toy climbs the metal structure holding the basketball hoop, and tips the basketball into the net, shaking the net when the basketball gets stuck. In the studio, there is debate as to whether or not Toy touched the basketball while trying to get it unstuck; Toy argues that there was a net between his hand and the ball, and even brings up La mano de Dios (a controversial 1986 FIFA goal in the match between Argentina and England, where to this day there is disagreement as to whether or not the goal was legal). Toy takes 5 minutes 56 seconds, and comes second, but a point is deducted due to ‘Toy-gate’, so he only earns three points.
  • Inês immediately sources a pool net from the shed and tries to fling the basketball into the hoop, but fails. Nevertheless, she tries this method several times. Eventually, Inês climbs into a small boat to get closer to the basketball hoop, and is able to use the net to dump the basketball through the hoop. Inês takes 7 minutes 28 seconds and comes third.
  • Jessica begins by picking up the basketball between her elbows and placing it on a long tube, hoping to flick the basketball directly into the net. She tries this method a few times, at one point swapping to using a helmet instead of the tube. When attempting to retrieve the ball once again, Jessica finds a much longer pool net she can use, and once she retrieves the ball, she quickly uses it to dump the basketball through the hoop. In the studio, the other contestants wonder why they were stuck with a smaller pool net; Nuno plays footage that reveals that Jessica hid the net behind a wall near the pool so that other contestants wouldn’t have the same advantage. Jessica takes 4 minutes 27 seconds and wins the task.
