Attempts

Here's a description of the contestants' attempts. Someone's probably working on collecting some images to add later!

  • Toy initially does not realise that Helena understands Portuguese. As such, he uses mime to convey his questions, and answers them himself to convey that he wants Helena to give her own answers. For example, he mimes birth, then uses his fingers to indicate the dates. He eventually realises that she can understand him, but still uses some mime while asking his questions; in return, Helena uses mime while answering (for example, rubbing her fingers together to indicate money while answering that her father is a businessman). Toy spends 8 minutes 40 seconds with Helena, but did not get all correct answers (the answers he got correct or incorrect were not specified in the studio). Toy earns fourth place.
  • Jessica misunderstands the task. She believes that the task involves having Helena understand the question being asked; that if Helena answers, that means that the question has been understood – she did not realise that she needed to obtain the information in Portuguese. Jessica primarily uses mime to convey her questions, but does sing a birthday song to Helena to ask when she was born. Jessica’s time is not given, but she obviously did not obtain any correct answers. Jessica earns last place.
  • Gilmário realises almost immediately (or just assumes) that Helena understands Portuguese, so begins his conversation with Helena by mentioning that Angola (his country of origin) and China have a good socio-political relationship, and that Helena should see this task as an opportunity to strengthen it. By asking a few unaired questions, Gilmário determines that “shi de” means ‘yes’ and “bushi” means ‘no’, and continues his interrogation of Helena primarily using yes/no questions, or listing things for her to confirm or deny (like types of food). Gilmário obtains all correct answers in 23 minutes – 14 minutes of which were spent solely on finding out when Helena was born - and earns third place – but Vasco bumps him up to second place, as he obtained all the relevant information, unlike António Zambujo, who only found out Helena’s birth year and not her entire date of birth.
  • Inês uses mime to convey her first question, then absolutely loses her mind with laughter when Helena responds in Mandarin. Eventually, Nuno steps in to inform Inês that Helena understands Portuguese, which causes Inês to laugh even more. When she is finally able to compose herself, Inês learns Helena’s birthday by listing numbers until Helena responds positively, then moves on to months and finally the year. It is not shown, but Inês learns the translations of “bushi” (‘no’) and “shi de” (‘yes’), but temporarily forgets them while questioning Helena about her father’s job. Inês guesses Helena’s fear very quickly, as she also happens to be scared of cats. Inês spends 10 minutes 20 seconds obtaining all the required information, and wins the task.
  • António pulls up a translation app on his phone and has Helena speak her answers into the phone. The phone does all the translation work for him. This starts an argument in the studio, as some of the regular contestants claim that they weren’t allowed to bring their phones into the room with them. Presumably António was the first to perform this task, and the producers did not want the regular contestants to do the same, and since the guests do not count as a separate team that can potentially win the show (unlike Bäst i Test), António was allowed to continue with his method. António ‘Nokia’ Zambujo spends 10 minutes 30 seconds with Helena and got nearly all the required information – instead of her full birthday, António only obtained Helena’s birth year. António earns second place – but Vasco drops him down to third place, as he did not obtain all of the required information, whereas the third-place scorer, Gilmário, did, just having taken a longer amount of time to do so.
