Task brief

The task brief is found on the table in the lab. The brief for the task is as follows:

Leave the lab in exactly seven minutes.

You get 30 seconds added to your time for each balloon you do not blow up until it bursts.

Whoever leaves the lab closest to seven minutes wins.

Your time starts now.

Task notes

  • Also on the table in the lab are 14 uninflated balloons, a balloon pump, and a pair of ear defenders.

Attempts

Here's a description of the contestants' attempts. Someone's probably working on collecting some images to add later!

  • Although everyone has problems understanding the task, Karin seems to have more trouble with it than anyone else. Unclear about how to complete the task, she fully inflates and ties one balloon, before re-reading the brief. She decides that she needs to fully-inflate all of the balloons but not burst them, but is still not sure this is correct. She then re-reads the task brief again, and seems to have an epiphany. She decides that she must, in fact, inflate all of the balloons until they burst. She does so, with all of the remaining balloons that she can, and then exits the room. In the studio, Olli reveals that she left two fully inflated and tied balloons, and one torn and uninflated balloon, behind in the room, adding 1 minute and 30 seconds to her time. He reveals that she left the room after 12 minutes and 36 seconds, giving her a total time of 14 minutes and 6 seconds. She therefore earns last place in the task.
  • Lars counts the balloons so he can figure out how much time they might account for. He inflates some, but not all, of the balloons, and leaves the room after what he estimates as 2 minutes, apparently confident that he has judged it correctly. In the studio, Olli reveals that he left the lab after 2 minutes and 10 seconds, and left 10 of the balloons un-burst (adding 5 minutes), so had a total time of 7 minutes and 10 seconds. Lars therefore wins the task.
  • Vidar initially does not touch any of the balloons, apparently planning on just waiting and leaving at the seven minute mark. However, he then re-reads the task and realises that he had interpreted it incorrectly, and jumps to action. He starts inflating the balloons but, realising he is short on time, starts bursting them with his fingernails, rather than waiting for them to burst from inflation alone. He leaves the lab at 7 minutes exactly. In the studio, Olli reveals that he only burst two balloons through inflation alone, meaning that he gained an additional 6 minutes in time for the other 12 balloons he burst manually. With his final time of 13 minutes, he earns second place in the task.
  • Leo decides to inflate and burst all of the balloons in order to not incur any extra time. However, he impatiently bursts all but one of the balloons with his fingernails, rather than waiting for them to burst from inflation alone. Using his phone to help him keep track of time, he leaves the lab at exactly 7 minutes. However, with 6 minutes and 30 seconds in extra time from the 13 balloons he popped with his hands, he ends up with a total time of 13 minutes and 30 seconds. He therefore earns third place in the task.
  • Hani decides she is just going to leave the lab at exactly 7 minutes, and not mess with the balloons. She uses her watch to accurately keep track of her time, leaving after exactly 6 minutes and 40 seconds. However, with the additional 7 minutes she gains from not bursting any of the balloons through inflation, her total time is 13 minutes and 40 seconds. She therefore earns fourth place in the task.
