Open the golden present

Task notes

• The lab has been decorated for a birthday party, with balloons and bunting.
• There are five wrapped presents on the table. Each present contains a plastic-lined wooden box with a hinged lid, and has different contents to provide clues to lead the contestants to the golden present.
• Present 1 contains Scrabble letters, each with different coloured dots on them depending on the word to which they belong, which spell out ‘Titta under bordet’ (‘Look under the table’). Underneath the table, there is a magnet which can be used to help find the needle in present 4.
• Present 2 contains a bowl of soup, within which are the letters ‘B’, ‘U’, ‘L’, ‘L’, and ‘E’, needed for the combination lock on present 4.
• Present 3 contains red jelly, within which a smartphone and SIM card are hidden, inside a bag. To insert the SIM card into the phone, the contestants need to find the needle in present 4. When they turn the phone on, they see an instruction on the screen to call a specific number, which is actually the phone in David’s pocket. David then answers the phone and tells the contestant exactly where the golden present is.
• Present 4, which is locked with a combination lock (code: ‘BULLE’, meaning ‘BUN’), contains hay, within which a needle is hidden.
• Present 5 contains sand, within which is hidden a small sieve for extracting the letters from the soup in present 2.
• David is wearing a conical party hat, underneath which is the golden present, which contains a squishy ball.
