Attempts

Here's a description of the contestants' attempts. Someone's probably working on collecting some images to add later!

  • Solveig attaches some planks to two barrels, to function as the base of the boat, before making it look nicer by adding a pink umbrella, a cushion, and the flag of Norway. At the start of testing, Olli is sitting on the boat, floating at the edge of the pool, while being slightly crushed by the umbrella. Olli enjoys the boat, but he does have to manually work on balancing himself. Some wind also catches the umbrella, and causes the boat to sail slightly. Solveig ends up in first place.
  • Amir uses a standard inflatable boat as a base, and attaches a toboggan to it. He attaches a thick pipe around the edge of the boat with string, and inflates some balloons to place at the open ends of the pipe. He also adds some flowers and a globe to the back of the boat. While Olli mounts the boat, Amir holds the string of the toboggan. He then hands Olli a fishing rod. Olli holds on to the side of the pool, as he believes the boat is sinking. Amir pushes him out, claiming the boat just has to get started, but Olli quickly grabs hold of the side again. The back half of the boat is quickly submerged, and Olli gets off of it, but the boat remains floating after he dismounts. Amir earns third place for the aesthetics of his non-functional boat.
  • Steinar decides that he needs to think outside the box. He then proceeds to tape two barrels together by walking around them with tape, which makes him dizzy. He sticks a stripy umbrella between the two barrels. Before Olli tests the boat, Steinar recommends Olli lies down on it, to keep a low centre of gravity. Steinar pushes the boat out into the pool, and it floats to the other end. Olli then reaches out to the side of the pool and the boat tips, causing him to fall in the water. To Steinar’s amazement, he earns second place.
  • While formulating her plan, Ida is holding a Norwegian flag and, for some reason, manages to hit herself in the face with it. Her first attempt is to put a snow-racer into the pool, which sinks to the bottom as soon as she climbs onto it. She spends the whole hour available to her, and ends up with the flag of Norway and a snow-racer sled attached to the top of an air mattress. Olli has some trouble getting onto the boat, tries to jump onto it, and falls off. Ida removes the flag, so that it doesn’t get in the way of boarding, and Olli almost manages to remain on the boat, but has to jump off as it capsizes. Ida then chooses to ride it herself, to show it working, while making engine noises. Olli wonders how she’s going to get off of the boat, which Ida eventually does by just tipping it and falling into the water. She earns fourth place.
  • Einar uses a large empty box as the foundation for his boat. He adds some artificial grass and a cushion on top, and also attaches an armless mannequin and an umbrella. While sitting on the boat next to the pool, he mimes rowing the boat and starts singing “Haul topsail, my boys! Heave-ho!”. After the boat is in the pool and Olli is sitting on it, Einar struggles to push it out but, when he does, he starts singing again. The ship tips capsizes, and Olli ends up sat on its side. Einar earns last place for building the most wet and sunken ship.
