Task brief

The task brief is found next to a rubber duck on a woodworking table just outside of the shed. The brief for the task is as follows:

Make a sailboat for a rubber duck.

The best sailboat wins.

You have five minutes.

Your time starts now.

Task notes

  • After the contestants have constructed their boats, Pilvi tests each of them in a nearby body of water.
  • There are similarities between this task and Taskmaster UK's 'Make the fastest egg boat' task, but they are different enough that this task is categorised as original here.

Attempts

Here's a description of the contestants' attempts. Images will be added later.

  • Pirjo admits that she knows nothing about sailboats. She wonders if she could build a bark boat (traditionally made from tree bark, using a stick and a leaf for the sail) in the allotted time, as they are easy enough to make that they are commonly made by children. After searching a few trees, she finds a few good strips of bark to serve as the boat. She uses a stick for the mast, and cuts a small sail from some fabric. Pirjo attaches the mast to the boat with a few clothes pegs, and attaches the strips of bark together using nails, accidentally nailing the bark to the workbench in the process. When Pilvi launches the boat, it floats for a few seconds before capsizing, so Pirjo is disqualified.
  • Fathi uses the blade of an oar as the mast of his boat. He ties some fabric around the top of the blade to serve as the sail, and gaffer-tapes a pool noodle around the bottom of the oar blade to serve as the boat. When Pilvi launches the boat, it successfully stays afloat, likely thanks to the pool noodle, but mostly stays in place and spins, as the mast and sail were not particularly effective. Fathi earns third place.
  • Jukka picks up a yellow helmet from the shed, and considers using it for his sailboat because it is duck-coloured. He uses a yellow flipper as a mast and sail, and attaches a bike horn he finds in the shed to his construction, as he considers the noise quite important to the process. He tells Pilvi he is happy with his boat. When Pilvi informs him that he still has half of his time left, Jukka declares that he will spend that time hopping back to the mansion on one foot. In order to stave off any impending criticism, Jukka says that he built his boat to be a “decorative item” and not actually sea-worthy. Sure enough, when Pilvi launches Jukka’s boat, it immediately capsizes, so Jukka is disqualified.
  • Kalle decides to make the sail first. He finds a bolt of fabric in the shed and cuts out a triangular shape to serve as the sail. The next we see of Kalle’s attempt is his completed boat: a small blue dish or lid onto which he has gaffer-taped the duck. The mast is made entirely of gaffer tape, and the sail is attached to it. When Pilvi launches the boat, is successfully stays afloat, though the sail is a bit too long and dips into the water. Kalle wins the task.
  • Eija finds what appears to be a triangular box kite, and declares that it would make for a good sail. She then simply ties the kite to an overturned helmet, and sticks the duck inside the kite. When Pilvi launches the boat, it successfully stays afloat, though it notably tilts to one side. Eija earns second place.
