Task brief

The task brief is received in the living room, where it is floating on the surface of some water in a fish-bowl on the desk. The brief for the task is as follows:

Make the fastest egg boat.

Your egg boat must look like a boat and transport an egg.

If your egg boat sinks or loses its egg, you're disqualified.

You have three minutes to order five materials, and then 15 minutes to make your egg boat.

Also, all your materials must start with the same letter, and you can't order anything boat-y.

Your time starts now.

Task notes

  • After all of the contestants have built their boats, Alex balances them all on a plank in a stream, from which he launches them all in their race against one another.

Attempts

Here's a description of the contestants' attempts. Someone's probably working on collecting some images to add later!

  • Frankie orders paper, plasticine, plastic (cling-film), picks (toothpicks), and a plant. He attempts to make an origami paper boat, which he then wraps in cling-film to water-proof it. Having done this, he acknowledges that he doesn't really need the other items. In the boat race itself, Frankie's boat quickly moves into second place, and then crosses the finish line first, at 1 minute and 33 seconds, after Mae's boat gets caught up. However, it is then revealed that his egg was tipped out of the boat immediately after it left the starting line, so Frankie is disqualified.
  • Kiell orders a "ball for golf", a balloon, a basket, a blue hat, and some bacon. He accidentally bursts his single balloon during construction, but Alex is able to replace it for him. He attaches the inflated balloon to the basket, where he says the egg will travel, wearing the small blue hat. While he is describing his plan, he realises that water is going to seep into the basket, and asks Alex the question "How heavy is the water?" (thus coining the title of the episode). Kiell's balloon has deflated considerably by the day of the boat race itself, but it remains afloat, and crosses the finishing line second, after 1 minute and 45 seconds. However, after Frankie is disqualified, Kiell moves up into first place.
  • Jenny orders "baffer tape" ("like gaffer tape, but better"), but this is disallowed. She ends up ordering "umpteen" bras, bread, 'bungees' (bungee cords), brown paper, and a bucket. She rips open the bras to extract the "foamy tit cups" from within, to act as buoyancy aids. She appears to wrap the bucket and some of the "foamy tit cups" up in the plastic bag from the loaf of bread, wraps it in brown paper, and secures it with bungee cords. There are bits of bread crust tucked in under the bungee cord, and the brown paper is used to create a vaguely boat-like shape around the otherwise un-boatlike construction. She writes 'HMS BOAT' on the front end of her boat, to ensure the message gets across. It's unclear where the egg rides on her boat, so it is presumably secured within the bucket. In the boat race itself, Jenny's boat crosses the finishing line third, after 1 minute and 46 seconds. However, after Frankie is disqualified, she moves up into second place.
  • Ivo orders "balls (ping-pong)", balloons, a banana, some blue tack, and a book. He blue-tacks four ping-pong balls to the underside of the book to provide buoyancy, and also attaches four inflated balloons to the top. He then puts a big wad of blue tack in the middle of the top of the book, and attempts to press the egg into it, acknowledging that he might have slightly neglected the egg. While he is doing this, he manages to break the egg. He then just eats the banana. In the boat race itself, Ivo's boat crosses the finishing line fourth, after 2 minutes and 4 seconds. However, after Frankie is disqualified, he moves up into third place.
  • Mae orders polystyrene, "plastic inflatable water wings" (armbands), "precious tape", paper, and a paper clip. They are given some very large chunks of polystyrene, so cut off a smaller cube of it, and then wedge this into one of the armbands. The egg sits in a depression they've created in the top of the polystyrene. In the boat race itself, Mae's boat takes an early lead, but then appears to get caught up on the bank of the stream after colliding with Ivo's boat, and ends up crossing the finishing line last, after 3 minutes and 25 seconds. However, after Frankie is disqualified, Mae moves up into fourth place.
