Task brief

The task brief is laid on a clipboard on one side of a table, and there is a man sat on the opposite side. The brief for the task is as follows:

Find a common acquaintance who is somehow linked to the person sitting in front of you.

The common acquaintance, in other words, is a person that you both know by name, and who also knows you by name from somewhere.

Whoever finds a common acquaintance in the shortest time wins.

You have 12 minutes.

Your time starts now.

Task notes

  • It seems likely that the production team had identified a common acquaintance the man had with each contestant prior to filming, as his answers to their questions are often vague, suggesting that he was directed to hint at the person he had in mind, rather than outright listing specific people, teams, or productions that he was connected with, without prompting.

Attempts

Here's a description of the contestants' attempts. Images will be added later.

  • Kalle begins by asking the man where he lives, and he responds that he lives in Vantaa. Kalle comments that he was born and raised in Helsinki, which borders Vantaa. When Kalle is unable to find a decent connection via their hometowns, he asks the man what he does for a living. The man replies that he is retired, but he does audio work as a hobby. Through further questioning, Kalle learns that the man does sports commentary – specifically, for basketball. Kalle asks if the man has ever commented on Ura Basket (a small-town basketball club) games. When the man replies in the affirmative, Kalle offers up the name of one of the players, whom Kalle and the man both know. Kalle takes 2 minutes and 34 seconds to find the mutual acquaintance, and earns third place.
  • Fathi finds out that the man lives in Vantaa (which borders Helsinki), and so names the Vantaa-based stand-up comedian Ali Jahangiri (the guest contestant in episode 10 of this season), but the man does not know him. Through a line of questioning which is not included in the edit, Fathi then learns that the man is involved in sports – specifically basketball. Fathi replies that he does not know much about basketball, he does know that the popular stand-up comedian Sami Hedberg loves basketball. He asks if the man happens to know Sami Hedberg, and the man replies that he does. Fathi takes 1 minute and 9 seconds to identify a mutual acquaintance, and earns first place.
  • Eija asks the man if he knows any newsreaders or television presenters, which he says he does not. She then follows up by asking if the man knows anyone who has been on television, which he says he does. After a few more questions, Eija asks the man what movie or television series the person the man knows was on. The man replies that it was a television series in the 1980s that involved winged animals. Eija realises that the man is referring to Lapinlahden Linnut (‘Birds of Lapinlahti’, a comedy band which also made television shows under the same name), and declares that they must then both know Mikko Kivinen (one of the original vocalists, who also does a lot of theatre work). Eija takes 2 minutes and 15 seconds to identify a mutual acquaintance, and earns second place.
  • Through a line of questioning which is not included in the edit, Pirjo is able to focus her guesses around Lahti (a large city where Pirjo was born and raised). The man shares that he attended school in Lahti for nearly a decade. When Pirjo learns the name of the school, she wonders if the man attended class with her stepfather, as they are of a similar age. This appears to throw the man (who seems to have a different mutual acquaintance in mind), as he stumbles over his reply that perhaps he and Pirjo’s stepfather were in the same grade together, but not necessarily the same classroom. Pirjo confidently declares that her stepfather is the connection between the two of them. However, she then calls her stepfather for confirmation, and learns that he had graduated five years before the man. The fact that the man knew someone with the same name in his own class at the same school turns out to be a complete coincidence. After some further questioning which does not make the edit, Pirjo learns that the man has worked on national broadcast radio, and therefore knows some of the reporters. She declares then that their mutual acquaintance must be the broadcaster Hanski Kinnunen, and the man agrees. Pirjo takes 7 minutes and 43 seconds to identify their connection, and earns last place.
  • Krisse asks the man if he knows anyone from Lahti (the capital city of the region where she was born and raised). When he replies in the affirmative, Krisse then asks if the man knows her father or her brother. She off-handedly comments that this task may be difficult as she doesn’t know anyone “born in the 1950s”, but then rallies and asks if the man knows any celebrities – specifically musicians. When the man replies that he does, Krisse starts listing off some older singers. After some further questioning which is not included in the edit, Krisse learns that the man is involved with sports commentary, and asks if he knows Antero Mertaranta (a very famous ice hockey commentator), which he confirms that he does. Krisse takes 3 minutes and 37 seconds to identify a common acquaintance, and earns fourth place.
