Attempts
Here's a description of the contestants' attempts. Images will be added later.
- Eija’s gift is rather large and puffy, leading Pilvi to guess that it contains a blanket or a bedspread. What Eija has actually wrapped is a fire blanket, surrounded by layers of cotton wool, tissue paper, and bubble wrap. Jaakko is disappointed that everyone had simply wrapped small items in large amounts of packaging, and awards them all a single point each.
- Krisse twists wrapping paper and bubble wrap into a complex form, intended to resemble a person sitting down (albeit an awkwardly-proportioned person, with no arms). The body of the figure contains the actual object she is disguising, and she is upset when the package won’t remain seated upright on the table. Based on the forked form of the package, Pilvi guesses that Krisse may have wrapped a dowsing rod (though she does not know the word for it, instead describing its function). As Pilvi struggles to cut through the bubble wrap, Krisse offhandedly mentions how she is trying to raise her children to know how to handle occasional disappointment, and that she had therefore once presented them with large birthday presents that actually had something tiny and insignificant inside. As if on cue, Pilvi finally cuts through the bubble wrap and finds Krisse’s object: a single small jingle bell. Jaakko is disappointed that everyone had simply wrapped small items in large amounts of packaging, and awards them all a single point each.
- After a few false starts, Pirjo manages to make an origami box out of the wrapping paper, which she then decorates with the Suurmestari wax seal. Pilvi inspects the package and comments that it’s packed similarly to how bakeries pack cakes. Pilvi shakes the box, but is unable to guess what might be in it. Upon opening the gift, Pilvi finds a single red oven mitt, which she uses as a hand puppet to thank Pirjo. Jaakko is disappointed that everyone had simply wrapped small items in large amounts of packaging, and awards them all a single point each. However, he awards Pirjo one additional point, as she’d actually constructed a box out of the wrapping paper. She therefore wins the task with her two points.
- Fathi is the only contestant whose chosen object appears to be shown clearly during the wrapping process: he says he has chosen to wrap his own spectacles, but also notes that deception is the most important part of the task. His object is wrapped in tissue paper and wrapping paper, and he then covers the whole package in clear packing tape. He also writes ‘SARKYVAA’ (‘FRAGILE’) on the package. Pilvi does not appear to even notice that Fathi’s glasses are missing, and suggests that he has tried to make her believe that the package contains an egg. She says that she thinks that the wrapped item is actually a small rock. Pilvi cuts open the packaging, which is mostly just tissue paper, and starts to slowly unwrap what is meant to be Fathi’s spectacles. However, in a bluff to not only Pilvi, but also to the viewing public, Fathi has simply hidden his spectacles and instead wrapped up one of the socks he’s been wearing all day. Jaakko is disappointed that everyone had simply wrapped small items in large amounts of packaging, and awards them all a single point.
- Kalle’s wrapped item looks vaguely like a large boot, and he describes it himself as looking like a giant’s felt boot, or a large rubber duck. When Pilvi inspects the package, she guesses that it could be a large stuffed toy duck. The ‘duck’ is shaped out of bubble wrap, inside of which Kalle has placed what appears to be his wedding ring. Both Kalle and Pilvi do impressions of the character Gollum (from The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings) when the ring is revealed. Jaakko is disappointed that everyone had simply wrapped small items in large amounts of packaging, and awards them all a single point each.
