Task brief

The task brief is tucked in between the slats of a wooden garden fence panel, on the driveway of the Taskmaster house. The brief for the task is as follows:

Create the best single picture of an animal doing something surprising.

All six blinds must be fully and equally involved in your picture.

You may not see each other’s work. and you may only say two words at a time.

After the task, your pieces will be lined up next to each other in this order:

1. Shortest Wikipedia entry.

2. Best Show at the Edinburgh Fringe winner.

3. Smallest shoe size.

4. The person whom Alex said ‘hello’ to first.

5. Most Twitter followers.

6. Lowest-scoring full name in Scrabble.

You may not move outside of your segment.

You have 15 minutes.

Your time starts when Alex blows his whistle.

Task notes

  • The fence panel is one of three which have been erected on the driveway, around a central point.
  • The end of each fence panel is capped with a fake hedge, which is about half the height of the fence panel.
  • A red rope has been laid on the ground around the trio of fence panels and hedges, defining the area within which each contestant must remain, during the task.
  • For the team of three, there is one narrow white roller blind mounted on each of the fence panels they can see.
  • For the team of two, there are two roller blinds mounted to one of their panels, and one mounted to the other.
  • Each contestant also has a plinth within their designated area, upon which there are a variety of poster paints, paintbrushes, and paint rollers.
  • Mounted above the doorway to the Taskmaster house, there is a reminder of the order in which the blinds will be lined up, once painted.
  • This task feels like a hybrid version of the ‘Draw the best picture of a British animal’ task (collaborative artwork, drawn in sections) and the ‘Draw a portrait of the Taskmaster across a flipchart’ task (a single image drawn across multiple canvases, which are then displayed together in a specific order). However, given the difference in the set-up, and added complications, it is categorised here as original.
