Task brief
The task brief is laid on a small table in the garden. The brief for the task is as follows:
Retrieve the eggs from the top of the pole.
One foot must stay on the ground throughout the attempt.
The most intact eggs retrieved wins.
You have 10 minutes.
Your time starts now.
Task notes
- Also on the table, there are two empty six-egg cartons, providing a hint as to how many eggs are available to the contestants.
- Nearby, there is a tall pole, on top of which there is a plate holding a dozen eggs.
- The task wording dictates that one foot must stay on the ground. The Finnish word ‘jalkaterä’ (foot; literally ‘leg end’) is very commonly shortened to ‘jalka’ outside of scientific usage, with ‘jalka’ also being the word for ‘leg’. This linguistic ambiguity is exploited by at least one contestant.
- The literal wording of the foot rule is ‘the other foot must stay on the ground’. Although the meaning of this is the same as has been translated, this specific wording forms the basis of an in-studio argument, so it is noted here. The task wording is a result of normal grammar and language, and is not intended to be any sort of tricky phrasing.
