Task brief

The brief for the task is as follows:

Predict whether an item will create a higher or lower number of decibels than the previous item.

If you are wrong, you are out.

Last player standing wins.

Task notes

  • The contestants in this task remain seated, while Alex and Greg take to the stage, where a long drinks bar has been set up.
  • On top of the bar are a series of items to be used to make noises.
  • Each contestants has a pair of paddles with the words 'higher' and 'lower' on them to indicate their guesses.
  • Although only three of the noises get heard during the episode, due to how quickly the task is won, footage of the contestants playing out the rest of the game for fun was released in the outtakes for the episode.
  • The full list of noises is as follows: a small horn (107db); a packet of cereal (suspended from about a metre's height above the bar) landing on the bar (101.9db); an electric toothbrush being thrust in and out of a glass bowl full of glass marbles, in a regulation manner (90.7db); a small blender full of banana (70db); a can of fizzy drink being opened inside a traffic cone (113.5db); a party popper being set off inside a balloon (108.1db); a small battery-operated fan blowing up a party blower (100.9db); and a basketball bouncing off a snare drum (105db).

Attempts

Here's a description of the contestants' attempts. Someone's probably working on collecting some images to add later!

  • Dara incorrectly guesses that the packet of cereal hitting the bar will be louder than the sound of the horn, and is eliminated in the first round, earning joint third place.
  • Fern incorrectly guesses that the packet of cereal hitting the bar will be louder than the sound of the horn, and is eliminated in the first round, earning joint third place.
  • Munya incorrectly guesses that the packet of cereal hitting the bar will be louder than the sound of the horn, and is eliminated in the first round, earning joint third place.
  • John correctly guesses that the packet of cereal hitting the bar will be quieter than the sound of the horn. He then incorrectly guesses that the sound of an electric toothbrush being thrust into a bowl of marbles will be louder than the sound of the cereal, and is eliminated in the second round, earning second place.
  • Sarah correctly guesses that the packet of cereal hitting the bar will be quieter than the sound of the horn. She then correctly guesses that the sound of an electric toothbrush being thrust into a bowl of marbles will be quieter than the sound of the cereal, and wins the task.
