Attempts

Here's a description of the contestants' attempts. Someone's probably working on collecting some images to add later!

  • Inês explores the house and comes back with two large spools of twine. She begins pulling the longer of the spools through the doughnut, until she becomes upset that she’s being boring. She decides to pass a walking stick through the doughnut – the tipping point is the crystal ball on the top of the stick; the doughnut splits while she attempts to get the ball through. Inês passes 62.67m of 2cm in diameter twine through the doughnut, and earns fourth place.
  • Jessica thinks she can pass her hand through the doughnut and wear it like a bracelet. Predictably, the doughnut splits very early on in her attempt. Jessica earns last place.
  • Gilmário finds a long pipe and passes it through the doughnut. On one end of the pipe, Gilmário has taped a long cable, so when the pipe passes through the doughnut hole, it is immediately followed by the cable, and the collective is considered a single object. Gilmário passes a 23.72m object of 7cm in circumference through the doughnut, and earns third place.
  • Manuel declares that he wants to avoid passing anything phallic through the doughnut. He gets an idea, leaves the room, and comes back with a knife and a cutting board. He declares that he’s had an ‘egg of Columbus’ moment – something brilliant that seems so simple in hindsight. Manuel cuts out part of the inside of the doughnut to make the hole bigger. Manuel passes a 40cm rolling pin of 17.5cm circumference through the doughnut hole, and earns second place.
  • Toy decides that the biggest thing he can think of is his voice. He gets close to the doughnut hole and sings a long, loud, operatic note. He briefly considers finding something physical to pass through the doughnut, but decides it’s not worth the effort or risk. He tells Nuno to (somehow) convert decibels to centimetres, and leaves. Toy’s voice is measured at 95 decibels. Vasco accepts the conversion of 1db = 1cm, and Toy wins the task.
