Task brief

The task brief is found on a table inside the plastic dome. The brief for the task is as follows:

Turn on the bubble machine.

You may not step off or move the doormat.

Fastest wins.

Your time starts now.

Task notes

  • Also on the table in the plastic dome, there is a bubble machine, a tape measure, a reel of red cotton thread (inside the core of which were the words 'look down'), a small torch (containing one AA battery), and a collection of felt tips which connect together.
  • Also in the dome is a doormat, a dressing gown (inside the pocket of which is the power pack for the bubble machine, requiring three AA batteries), a remote control car (with two AA batteries on top of it, with the text 'look down' written on them), the remote control for the car (hidden on the underside of the table), and the mains power cord for the bubble machine's power pack (hidden in the floor beneath the table).

Attempts

Here's a description of the contestants' attempts. Someone's probably working on collecting some images to add later!

  • As Fern arrives, Alex asks her to "enter the wonderful ball". While looking around for a power supply for the bubble machine, she finds the remote control for the RC car strapped to the underside of the table, and uses it to bring the car to her feet, so she can grab the two batteries from its roofrack. While inspecting the bubble machine to see if the batteries might go inside, she accidentally tips out much of the bubble fluid. She uses the extended tape measure to hook the dressing gown, and reaches into its pocket to grab the power pack within. She soon discovers that she requires more than just the two batteries she has, though. Feeling tired and cold, she again uses the tape measure to reach and retrieve the dressing gown, which she then puts on. She crouches down and checks underneath the RC car, just in case the third battery is there. She then discovers that the small torch on the table contains a battery, so is able to fully power the bubble machine from the battery pack, switching it on after 7 minutes and 40 seconds, earning third place.
  • As Dara arrives, Alex asks him to "enter the enchanted orb". While looking around for a power supply for the bubble machine, he finds the remote control for the RC car strapped to the underside of the table, and uses it to bring the car to his feet, so he can grab the two batteries from its roofrack. He then removes the fake cactus from its pot, to see if there is anything else in there. He uses the extended tape measure to hook and retrieve the dressing gown, and finds the power pack within its pocket. He soon discovers that he requires more than just the two batteries he has, though. He returns his attention to the cactus, convinced that it is the key to solving the problem. He then tries manually blowing into the bubble machine, for some reason. He then discovers the third battery inside the small torch, so is able to fully power the bubble machine from the battery pack, switching it on after 6 minutes and 35 seconds, and earning second place. As he recalls how his wife told him to "always check under the table", it is revealed that a mains supply for the bubble machine was also available to him, if he had more carefully followed his wife's advice.
  • As John arrives, Alex tells him to enter "the futuristic globule". John immediately flicks the power switch on the bubble machine, and argues for several minutes that the machine is on, even though it does not have any power. He considers for a minute that he might need to find a power supply for the machine, but then decides that perhaps he's meant to "fix" the machine instead. He reasons that there is probably a screwdriver in the dressing gown. He moves the entire table back and forth, but does not notice the mains power supply hidden in the floor. Using the table for support, he stretches across the dome to reach the dressing gown and extract the power pack from its pocket. He uses the extended tape measure to reach the RC car and pull it to his feet, but does not notice the batteries in clear view on its roofrack, instead trying to open the battery compartment on its underside. He finds one battery inside the small torch, and eventually finds the other two batteries on top of the RC car, after placing it right-side up on the floor. However, he somehow puts the batteries into the power pack incorrectly, and is unable to close it completely, or open it again to fix the issue (even with Alex's help). However, the power pack apparently still works in its jammed state, and he is able to turn the machine on after 10 minutes and 45 seconds, earning fourth place.
  • As Munya arrives, Alex asks him to "enter the magical sphere". His first question about the task is whether he needs to turn the bubble machine on "mechanically or sexually". He tries the power switch on the machine several times, before trying to use the extended tape measure, but having trouble making it rigid enough to do anything with. He is eventually able to extend it far enough to hook the RC car and pull that to his feet, retrieving the batteries from its roofrack. To reach the dressing gown, he constructs a grappling hook from the small torch and the cotton thread. He believes that there must be additional AA batteries inside the RC car, so decides that he'll need to fashion a screwdriver from the wire coathanger on which the dressing gown is hung, in order to get inside. He uses his grappling hook to retrieve the coat hanger, but is unable to convert it into the screwdriver he needs. He eventually finds the third battery inside the small torch, and turns the machine on after 11 minutes and 41 seconds, earning last place.
  • As Sarah arrives, Alex tells her to "go into the plastic igloo". She is immediately impressed by the clipped-together felt-tip pens. She quickly finds the remote control for the RC car strapped to the underside of the table, and uses it to bring the car to her feet, retrieving the batteries from its roofrack. While inspecting the bubble machine, she accidentally tips out some of the bubble fluid. To reach the dressing gown, she initially attempts to construct a long arm out of the clippable pens. She eventually decides to check the floor, and spots the mains power supply for the machine. She plugs it in and turns the machine on after 6 minutes and 16 seconds, winning the task.
