In this version of the task, the contestants must write and perform a jingle for a business selected at random from a jar full of business cards. They have a short period of time to call and interview the business owner. The choice of instrumentation is entirely up to the contestants.

Task brief

The task brief is held in the receiver cradle of an old-fashioned rotary phone, on the table in the study. The brief for the task is as follows:

Write a jingle for a small business from one of Tom’s business cards.

You will have five minutes to call and interview the business owner, then 30 minutes to write and perform your jingle.

The most convincing and effective jingle wins.

Your time starts when you’ve selected your business card.
A number of business cards inside a red jar, including one for ‘Double Trouble Co.’ and ‘Sam the Butcher’.

Task notes

  • Tom Cashman holds a jar which has been painted red, and contains the business cards for an assortment of small businesses, from which the contestants must choose one at random.
  • While the contestants make their calls to the businesses, their phones are propped up in the receiver cradle of the old-fashioned rotary phone on the table.
